I have recently had inquiries about the difference between Chuppah’s Arches and Arbors so I thought it would be a good topic for a blog post as I am sure there are other couples asking the same questions.
The chuppah, like the one in the picture on the left is a tapestry attached to the tops of four poles. The word chuppah means covering or protection, and is intended as a roof or covering for the couple at their wedding. The “roof” consists of a cloth or sheet, sometimes a tallit which is a Jewish prayer shawl. The tallit could be stretched or supported over four poles, or manually held up by attendants to the ceremony. A chuppah symbolizes the home that the couple will build together. It is said that the couple’s ancestors are present at the chuppah ceremony.
Of course you don’t have to be Jewish to have 4 poles with material wrapped around them for your ceremony and in fact one of the couples whose wedding I am planning are not Jewish but mentioned that they still love the symbolism and wants a Chuppah for their wedding.
This is of course where many of the most magical memories of your wedding day will occur so it is an important part of your wedding. Whether you are renting a ready-made chuppah, arch or arbor, using the spoils of nature or making one yourself, it is important to have some vision of what you want it to look like. Here are some different decoration styles and ideas to get you inspired!
Arches and arbors have no specific religious meaning as the chuppah and are singular structures that a couple might stand in front of versus completely underneath. Arbors can be all different shapes and sizes and arches are typically rounded as shown in the pictures below. I have seen arches and arbors fashioned out of flowers or shells, wooden branches, twigs and material hung over tree branches.
Whether you want a Chuppah, Arbor or Arch for your wedding there are many styles to choose from to make it your own. Elegant, rustic, or ethereal; let your personality shine through. Add decor that has meaning to you and your significant other and/or your favorite flowers. It is important however that is in harmony with your venue, color scheme and theme. A beach themed chuppah or arch will look a little out-of-place in the middle of the mountains for instance, but then again it is your wedding! If you have separate areas for the ceremony and reception you can also have two different color schemes. I have seen all white flowers and decor for the ceremony and blues with gold accents for instance for the reception.
Your venue should determine where the arch or chuppah will show the best as you can see in the pictures. These locations truly added to the magic of the moment!
